General Summary:
Under the supervision of the Traffic and Safety Director, this position performs a variety of tasks related to the design and maintenance of traffic signals, road signs, and pavement markings throughout the County. This position will aid in the design and provide technical review for various geometric, safety, and capacity components of County road and bridge projects.
Typical Duties:
1. Provides general oversight for the County’s traffic signal and beacon network. This involves working on the various programming and functionality aspects of each signal and beacon.
2. Oversees the maintenance and upkeep of all pavement markings, including long line, arrows, stop bars, etc.
3. Works directly with sign crews to provide guidance for new installation, repair, and replacements of County-owned signs.
4. Reviews traffic impact studies for proposed commercial and residential developments.
5. Completes crash analyses for intersections and segments in the County system. Provides recommendations and support for improvements using modeling and warrant analysis.
6. Works with consultants, as applicable, to coordinate and review project designs. Assists in the preparation of bid documents and specifications for contracted work related to traffic safety projects. Manages project files, updating them as work progresses.
7. Assists in the collection of traffic count data. Provides direct oversight to subordinate personnel in collection efforts.
8. Gathers and analyzes preliminary data to assist in determining design requirements and prepares cost estimates for safety-related projects.
9. Uses professional engineering principles and experience to evaluate options and determine appropriate courses of action for safety concerns and issues on the County network.
10. Performs other duties as required.
Employment Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent, is required.
Special Employment Requirements:
A valid Michigan Motor Vehicle Operator’s License is required. Licensure as a Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan, or the ability to obtain licensure, is preferred. Experience with controller programming, MERL, Synchro, Microsoft Office, and GIS are highly desirable.
