AMS Little Rock will open its doors to students in the 2024-2025 academic year. During the 2023-2024 school year, this position will play a critical role in the setup of school operations and student/family recruitment, engagement, and enrollment in the months leading up to our launch.

Job Description:

The School Counselor’s role is to provide mental health support services to scholars and character-building program support for teachers. Counselors collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and the campus community to provide counseling service minutes to high-risk scholars. The ideal candidate for this position is firm and caring and believes that all scholars can be successful. Counselors align with the mindset that mental health support services and school character building programs must be implemented in tandem to create a thriving learning environment both for the individual and for all scholars on campus.

Responsibilities:

Receive and process school counseling referrals submitted by teachers, administrators, parents, and other school staff.

Utilize the counseling screener to identify high-risk scholars that qualify for mental health support services minutes in the 1 on 1 or group counseling formats.

Develop and deliver training for teachers and administrators on the effective implementation of the community wide character-building support program curriculum, Character Strong.

Provide general education individual counseling, group counseling, 504 accommodation plan counseling, and assigned IEP service minutes counseling to the scholars in the campus community.

Set goals for scholars, teach scholars skills, and grow their ability to overcome social, emotional, and behavioral issues to better succeed on campus academically.

Update and maintain the mental health services caseload on campus by EOD Wednesday each week using the General Counseling Tracker.

Identify, assess, and respond appropriately to scholars in crisis by notifying the administrative team and utilizing external support services.

Attend and assist with school events such as musical programs, athletics, student recognition ceremonies, graduation, and open house.

Adhere to all district counseling policies and procedures.

Attends all staff in-service meetings and workshops.

Required Certifications/Degrees:

State counseling licensure, Arkansas School Counselor Certificate

Master’s degree in School Counseling, Education, Psychology or a related field

Knowledge, Skills, and Prior Experience:

Prior experience in the mental health support services field preferred.

Prior teaching experience preferred but not required.

Knowledge of state and federal law as it pertains to mental health support services that can be offered on campuses in contrast with services that must be referred to medical health professionals outside of campuses.

Prior experience with the Character Strong character-building program and curriculum preferred.

Has knowledge and becomes an expert resource on character development research, evaluation, strategies, theories, techniques, and methods of instruction.

Has successful experience designing and delivering professional development.

Plans, organizes, provides leadership, and works collaboratively with other staff members.

Possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create productive and healthy relationships.

Demonstrates strong organizational skills with outstanding attention to detail.

Proficient in MS PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
